What are Order Tags?

Order Tags are used to label specific order types within your eCommerce platform orders data. Here are 2 reasons why Order Tags are important.

1. Tags allow you to distinguish between trackable and non-trackable orders

Order tags help us validate your data, which is an important part of onboarding and general account maintenance.

For any orders that are non-trackable by nature, please label them with an order tag. This allows our team to “exclude” them while validating your data.

An order is considered non-trackable if we don’t expect the online web pixels (Base Pixel and Purchase Pixel) to fire during the purchase journey. Non-trackable orders include any order placed outside of the website checkout where the conversion pixel does not fire. These order types do not have web tracking – therefore, we don’t expect to attribute them.

Common Examples:

  • Orders created in the backend (ex. draft, wholesale, sales representative orders, phone orders, etc.)
  • Orders from a 3rd party app or marketplace (ex. Tapcart, Walmart, other retail, etc.)

We encourage Order Tags since this is usually relevant to specific orders, rather than  specific customers. Although Customer Tags are also an option if easier.

2. Tags indicate whether an order is a subscription vs. one-time purchase

Our system uses Order Tags to distinguish subscription purchases vs. one-time purchases.

Make sure your first-time subscriptions and recurring subscriptions are uniquely tagged.

For example:

  • First-time subscriptions are tagged with “first time subscription”
  • Recurring subscriptions are tagged with “recurring subscription”

We’ve seen that most Shopify subscriptions automatically append these tags, (ex. Recharge), but double check to confirm.

Once tagged, make sure they’re properly assigned in your dashboard to activate Subscription Analytics.
